Calibrate and Configure Your Power Management IC with NVM IP
On October 11th, 2018, the world woke up to the news that tech-titan Apple had agreed to buy a portion of chip supplier Dialog Semiconductor in a deal valued at ~$600 million. Dialog Semiconductor, which was founded in 1985 had emerged as the exclusive supplier of power management integrated circuits (PMICs) for Apple’s lineup of mobile products by 2007 and the high-profile acquisition of Dialog’s intellectual property and workforce in 2018 was a recognition by Apple of the importance of PMICs to the success of their end products. That was only the second time Apple had decided to bring in house a key technology to enable their systems, the first being the design of their own processors in 2010. Next came the announcement in Feb. 2021 that Renesas would acquire Dialog in its entirety. Renesas followed up by completing the acquisition on August 31st, 2021, for a price tag of ~$5.7 billion. Apple’s partial acquisition and then Renesas’ acquisition of the rest of the company has reinforced the reality that PMICs (Figure 1) are crucial to the functioning of cellphones, tablets, wearables, IoT devices, industrial control and communication networks, and automotive electronic systems.
